Top 5 Best Things To Do In Bikaner

Let’s start the new  topic “ Things To Do In Bikaner in 2025 “ – Bikaner isn’t precisely a touristy kind of place. It’s little more than a place to break the journey, sandwiched between Punjab’s Amritsar and Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, and few pauses to see what lies within. This little city is a bit of a hidden gem, but if you give it a chance, you will see some great things!

Where is Bikaner?

Bikaner is a major city in the State of Rajasthan, toJaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Ajmer lie to its north, and to its northwest, the Agra district.

How to get to Bikaner?

Bikaner serves as the food base to the western part of the state of Rajasthan and the southern area of Punjab. If you are travelling to Punjab’s state capital of Amritsar from the state of Rajasthan, you will most likely pass through or have to change trains at Bikaner. There are train connections to the Rajasthani cities Jodhpur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer and beyond to Delhi.

For those coming by road, there are buses and minivans from most major towns and cities in the region and the states next door.

If you need to book buses and trains beforehand, head to 12Go.

We reached Bikaner from an overnight bus trip from Amritsar and it was really early in the morning when we reached there. We had a full day to explore Bikaner before taking our overnight train further on to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Highlights of Things To Do In Bikaner

  • The Shri Laxminath Temple
  • Rat Temple – Shri Karni Mata
  • Junagarh Fort Bikaner
  • Old Town & Bikaner Havelis
  • Places To Visit Bikaner

1 – The Shri Laxminath Temple Bikaner

Don’t Miss out the Splendid Shri Laxminath temple in Bikaner. The wealth of the temple’s Jain architects allowed them to build it on ghee rather than water. The exquisite temple’s interiors are gorgeous. They are covered with breathtaking paintings and carvings. No extravagance was spared to furnish the sacred place, and mirrored tiles and gold gilt offered vivid hues while maintaining harmony without being overbearing.

While donations are accepted, entry to the temple is free.

The temple is located right in the center of town, surrounded by lively markets selling everything from saris to watermelons. During our trip, we were fortunate enough (thanks to a lucky accident) to watch and join a procession around the temple. It was led by camels with coconut head-dressed ladies, alongside masked dancers and riders, seemingly escorting a holy relic out of a nearby temple. This is just one of the many ways India brings color and surprise to life and is nothing short of a breathtaking experience.

2 – Rat Temple ( Shri Karni Mata Bikaner )

Take a tuk-tuk or car from Bikaner and visit Shree Karni Mata Temple, which is located 30 minutes away from Bikaner. Over five centuries old, the temple is still essential for an extraordinary Hindu tale and custom. What comes next is a very liberal paraphrase of the mythology.

“A woman named Karni Mata was the physical form of the goddess Shakti. Karni Maya’s youngest son (adopted, as she was a celibate) drowned in a lake close by and she was asked to revive him. Karni Mata went to the place where the temple is located, locked herself inside, and talked to the Lord of Death. The Lord of death asked her that how would reincarnation work after she revokes the son?

Kami Mata answered, for my lineage and dependents: “Whatever place I will call my home, they will call it home. Whenever they die, they will remain with me”. She took the reincarnation of the holy rat and it is said that every one of her descendants die, they are reborn for one cycle with her, as her rodent in the temple!”

The temple has over 20,000 of these holy rodents, which pilgrims and devotees venerate.

Offerings of food and milk are left unattended while rats scurry about uncontested.

One of her immediate sons, or perhaps even Kami Mata herself, is believed to be represented by a white rat, which is very auspicious.

First, calling the rat temple “infamous” and “an attraction” is rather snobbish and unwarranted. This isn’t an attraction; Shree Kami Mata is centered around reincarnation. The temple rats are the ancestors of the worshipers and are revered and cared for as such. So, If you are creeped out by rats or overwhelmed by the ancient temples as a traveler, then forget about this temple and remember that it isn’t about you.

BIkaner’s Rat Temple, aka Shree Kami Mata’s temple, is beautifully designed with pink and white paints.

We uncovered some of the legendary, most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited. I deeply remember the places I visited and wish to share them. However, I was deeply shaken by how attempts were made to populate it from the perspective of bids to make money. Do not visit if your sole reason is to scream, and/or a slight disturbance is created when a rat happens to cross your foot. One should remember to leave footwear outside the door because no shoes are permitted in the sanctuary.

From Bikaner, I believe most guides would be willing to take you to this sanctuary. If you hired a vehicle of your own, then Shree Kami Mata is about 30 km from Bikaner. Deshnoke does have a railway station and while we could not locate the timetable, I am sure a lot of help would be provided.

You are most welcome to the shrine without paying any fees, and a nominal amount will be charged to store your shoes at the foot washing stations. As we have said, there is no need to worry a lot about socks, but if you are fussy about dirty floors and too comfortable washing your feet, you have a chance to cleanse while exiting.

3 – Junagarh Fort Bikaner

At the Old Town’s center lies the magnificent and immense construction of Junagarh Fort. Like the other unfortunate buildings, the Junagarh Fort towers with a combination of a beautiful south-facing fort and is perpetually taken care of. The windows and door frames of every single room and hall in this type of building are a mixture of different exquisite deep-colored stones, mirrors, and glass, which gives it a gorgeous look.

Junagarth, because it is known as an old fort, had its name after the ruling family of the fort migrated to a different nearby palace. Before the name change, Junagarh fort was called Chimtamani.

With its stunning beauty, this fort has a great museum with fascinating art pieces and items such as: chairs with canopies, medieval weaponry, and even a WW1 airplane! I visited it on my way to Shree Karni Mata Temple. I was stunned by the crystal encrusted rooms and beauty of this fort.

Outside the central structure of the fort are scattered the disused fragments of the fort’s other buildings. There are some beautiful gardens outside the fort too, but we were not sure if we could go into them since it looked like they were setting up for a wedding or some other big function.

Foreign tourists can now access Junagarh Fort for 400 rupees per person (£3.80 or $4.81), much lower than Indian nationals. Group tours are available, but guests also have the option to explore the grounds on their own. Although pricey, the fort houses washrooms and a beautiful cafe that is worth visiting.

4 – Old Town & Bikaner Havelis

Bikaner Old Town is a beautiful archaeological architectural recall of bygone eras. We were staying in the old town of Bikaner that is close to the Rampuria Haveli. Havelis are grand townhouses traditionally built by wealthy feudal lords.

About the Old Town, Aldous Huxley said that “the pride of Bikaner” was “the rampuria haveli, “the sophisticated red sandstone structure that greets one in the old town When turning around certain corners. The rampuria haveli was constructed, as most other old town bikaneri structures, in the 1400-1500s by the prosperous rampuria merchant family. Several restorations throughout time have added to the rich blend of traditional Indian and European-influenced architectural styles, parts of which are accessible to the public.

Though in Bikaner for only three days, these were the last few hours we spent wandering in the Bikaneris old town. It is entrancing and evocative. Save for occasional dua or dual carriage bikes and tuck tucks crossing the streets elsewhere, this is a timeless place fusing centuries of CHO. Children playing on the aged stones, ducked dry clothes hanging along cords tens of feet above ground.

Kindly focus on the fact that we visited Bikaner in winter so it was quite a relaxed trip for us. While writing this review, we noticed that many reviewers of The Old Town say the exact opposite, so be warned that it may be packed during peak season. If you visit during the timeframe we did (around July), remember that the daytime temperature will be blistering hot.

How To Visit Bikaner , Places To Stay In Bikaner , How Long Do You Need  ?

The problem so far is that we didn’t stay overnight in Bikaner due to a mix-up with the trains, which makes this a tricky question to answer. We have done the activities in a single unhurried day so we have a suggestion for you, do like as we did. If you wish, there are more things to explore in the town, and you could spend another day or so spreading your activities out.

If Bikaner is just a stopover for you, consider contacting one of the local guest houses and renting a room for half a day. We have paid almost £15.00 / $19.00 for hotel stay per night and meals included with transportation in Bikaner.  If we only wanted the room, it would be significantly cheaper (700 rupees or £6.65 / $8.42). The food made the price worth it. The peace of mind provided by the tuk-tuk taxi was well worth the money. After an overnight bus journey and before an overnight train journey, complete privacy and a shower felt exceptional. There was also a secure location to store all the bags and charge the phones.

We opted for the M.I. guesthouse since it provided effortless access to the Old Town and let us easily explore the beautiful ancient streets. The guest house was very cordial in sorting out our train mix-up and with our tour arrangements. The tour included visiting the Jain temple and the Shree Kami Mata (rat temple). A guide and a driver dropped us at the fort after the tour.

This set us back 1500 rupees (£14.25 or $18.04). Given that we only had one day to explore the area, this was very convenient, and we were glad we spent that amount. For those travelers with more extended stays, you may have been able to find another operator who could do it cheaper, but honestly, it was worth the expense.

Given that you only have one day to schedule your arrival for the first half of the day and depart during the evening or late night hours to provide as much time as possible in Bikaner.
